A maid living in post-World War I England secretly plans to meet with the man she loves before he leaves to marry another woman.
The story takes place on Mother's Day in 1924. Mr and Mrs Niven give their housekeeper, Jane Fairchild, the day off, as the couple are set to go to their neighbour's house to celebrate his engagement. The truth is Jane and the neighbour Paul, have been having an affair for many years.
