Collecting and the concept of modernity are bound together through a long line of ‘passionate acquirers’ like Augustus Pitt-Rivers, Henry Wellcome and Robert Sainsbury. The curiosities have also inspired modern artists from Picasso and Duchamp to Damien Hirst and Peter Blake. The modern collectors were/are often particularly interested in the non-western objects. Their place as ‘curious’ in a Western context highlights problematic power relations. This session will examine the relationship between the objects and the acquirer, the collected and the collector.
