Study Day: Breakfasts, Banquets, Tulips and Skulls

Study Day: Breakfasts, Banquets, Tulips and Skulls

Babylon ARTS’ first socially distanced study day, will be led by seasoned speaker Dr Kajsa Berg. Here she explains more about the topic for this study day:

Still life painting blossomed in the 17th century. There were several types depicting inanimate objects; breakfasts and banquets, vanitas, flowers, game, books and musical instruments. Most of these were depicted with startling naturalism; tables spread with trappings of wealthy lives, vases overflowing with tulips, lobsters and sweets tempting the viewer. There were also elements of symbolism; skulls, snuffed out candles and flies on decaying fruit, all suggesting the transience of life. This study day will analyse the style, meaning and market for these pictures.
