Comic Book Windows

Comic Book Windows

Co-create an exhibition of Manga (comic book) illustrations across the five Babylon Gallery windows.

We’re working with Irina Richards, a local Manga Artist, who is creating 60 new illustrations, one for each of our riverside window panes.

The exhibition will comprise three separate comic ‘strips’, two based on Irina Richard’s own stories and one using a poem submitted by the public. Now this is where you come in!

There are two ways to get involved:

1. Colour

We are looking for 36 people/households to adopt and co-create an individual illustration, by adding the colour to a black and white illustration produced by Irina. This can be using any medium, including coloured pencils, pastels, paint or even scrapbooking. We only ask that the illustration remain 2D so that we can easily attach your creation to the gallery window and scan it. We welcome families, individuals and groups, artist or not, to adopt an illustration to be given its colour!

To take part please email to request your black and white illustration. Please include:

  • who in your household will be adopting the illustration,
  • your full postal address
  • if you are able to visit Babylon Gallery on your daily exercise to drop off the illustration or whether you require a stamp to return it via post.

We will post you two copies of the illustation to colour in. This means you can have a practice, or colour two and keep one for yourself.

Once completed, please post or drop off your co-created illustration to the Babylon Gallery, Waterside, Ely, CB7 4AU to be displayed in the gallery windows.

Don’t forget to sign your coloured comic illustration. Here are some examples of the illustrations:

2. Create - A chance to turn your poetry into a Comic Strip!

You can also get involved by submitting a poem, which can be inspired by anything you like! One poem will be selected and turned into a 24 windowpane Comic Strip by Irina Richards.

To submit, please email your poem of between 10-12 lines long. All poetry submissions will be published in a booklet and given away to the first 200 visitors the Babylon gallery when we re-open. The winning poem will become a comic strip and will be on display in the windows of the Babylon Gallery whilst closed and will feature in a planned exhibition when we re-open.

Deadline for poetry submissions: 14th June 2020.

Please note: By agreeing to take part in this project, you are agreeing to return your completed illustration within two weeks of the date you receive your adopted illustration. If you are unable to drop off your entry at Babylon Gallery in your daily exercise time and require a stamp, please let us know.

Comic Book

Will will be turning all the finished comic strips into a limited edition comic book, which will be given to those that take part and our first 200 visitors to the Babylon Gallery once we re-open.
