Innovation Music Nights

The Innovation Music Nights are organised by Babylon ARTS to encourage, support and develop live music in Ely. The project is funded by Youth Music and delivered in partnership with The Garage in Norwich.

The nights are designed to test out different venues and explore different ways of presenting live music in Ely. The first show took place on Friday 6th November 2015 at the Ely Maltings and in total 11 Innovation shows have now been staged across 4 different venues (The Babylon Gallery, Centre-E, Jubilee Gardens and The Maltings).

The events are also intended to give local musicians opportunities for regular live performance to enable them to develop their musical skills, confidence and stage show. All ages and musical styles are welcome to take part. So far 47 musicians have performed including solo performers and bands. It has been fantastic to hear everything from acoustic pop to funk and rock.

Babylon ARTS, Youth Music and The Garage are all committed to nurturing local musicians and believe that young people need to be at the heart of deciding how these events evolve. Therefore the shows are organised and run by the Babylon ARTS Arts Crew; a group of young people aged 14 to 25 who wish to get more involved with their local arts scene. The crew formed in 2009 and have helped plan and run a number of successful theatre, music and comedy shows. It is wonderful for the Arts Crew to have a long term project they can get their teeth into. The shows give them a chance to try out new ideas, work in different venues and promote different styles of music. This will help them understand the local music scene and find out what events people want. The name and logo were created by the crew. They also select the line ups and run the light and sound tech.

Performers are not paid to perform but he project covers all the costs for venue hire, tech support and promotion. Ticket prices are kept low to encourage people to come along and discover what is on offer.

The next Innovation Music Night takes place on Saturday 19th November at Centre-E, Barton Rd, Ely CB7 4DE
