Ely Cinema based in The Maltings on Ely’s Riverside, is facing the difficult decision on whether to close later this summer. The small independent cinema has been in the building for over 20 years but arts charity Babylon ARTS who operate the single screen can no longer afford to subsidise its operation.

Claire Somerville, Chief Executive of the local charity said “We need to raise an additional £17K over the coming year to ensure the survival of the cinema.

With more competition from the out of town national chain we’ve seen a gradual decline of our audiences over the last two years. One of the hottest summers on record and the toughest trading in the UK for the last 10 years has created a situation where our charity is increasingly having to subsidise the running costs of the cinema. This is clearly not sustainable in the long term and in a few months the Board will be facing the difficult decision to close it permanently.

We know the community value the cinema, it is well loved and we have a loyal audience and fantastic volunteers who value it as a communal space that brings a unique cinema experience to the heart of our local community.

Initially we’re seeking individuals, companies or local groups to pledge £100 each to our Save Ely Cinema fund by 1st June. Thoroughout the coming year we'll also be having fundraising events so do sign up to our monthly email to find out more.

Campaign update:
Our campaign has been boosted by a generous donation from the Ely Film Society who have pledged £1000 towards Save Ely Cinema. The Peter Dawe Charitable Trust which gave an interest free loan to help the cinema 'Go Digital' has offered a payment holiday to our charity until we have reached our goal.  We have been heartened by the pledge responses to date - these will all help us reach our target of £17,000. Our first milestone is the 1st June.

We're grateful to recieve pledges of any amount, so if you'd like to be part of our campaign please pick up a pledge form or download one here and return it to Babylon ARTS. We also need people to come and come more often to our films and live event screenings.

Once lost, it will be lost forever so please help us to continue operating this valued community asset. If you’d like to pledge or donate money please contact us on 01353 616991 or email to find out more about our campaign.”
