Save Ely Cinema : can you help?

Save Ely Cinema : can you help?

Ely Cinema is under threat and we need to raise at least £17,000 over the next year to ensure its survival.

We've just launched a campaign to save Ely Cinema at The Maltings. Our small independent cinema has been in the building for over 20 years but our charity can no longer afford to subsidise its operation. We need to raise an additional £17K over the coming year to ensure its survival.

We recognise that you and many others value the cinema; it is a well loved asset to the community, supported by fantastic volunteers.

Alongside many high street and small independent traders we have seen some of the toughest trading in the UK for years. This together with more competition from the out of town national chain has meant a gradual decline of our audiences. Over the last two years the charity has increasingly had to subsidise the cinema, which is clearly not sustainable in the long term. In a few months our Board will be facing the difficult decision to close it permanently.

What can you do to help?

Firstly we'd  encourage you and your friends and family to come to our cinema more often. Our April programme is now online book tickets here and includes some excellent films and two live event screenings: All About Eve (sold out in London) and the Royal Opera House production of Faust.

Secondly, if you are able, we’re seeking 30 people to pledge £100 each to a cinema fund by 1st June; this will help pay towards the projector warranty and maintenance. Download a pledge form here.

Once lost, the cinema will be gone forever so please help us continue operating this valued community asset. To pledge or donate please contact office@babylonarts.org.uk or call 01353 616991, 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday.

Thank you in advance for your support.
